One of the most consequential decisions a Nepali student makes is choosing the right intake. Apply to the wrong one — or miss a deadline — and you face a 12-month delay and significant financial loss. This guide tells you exactly when to apply for each country, what the intakes are called, and which one makes the most sense for most Nepali students.
Australia — Intakes and Deadlines
Australia has two primary intakes each year.
Semester 1 (February/March start) is the main intake. It is the most competitive, offers the widest range of programs, and is the recommended choice for most Nepali students. Applications typically open in March–June of the previous year and close by October–November.
Semester 2 (July/August start) is the second major intake. Not all programs are available, but many are. This is the right choice for students who need additional time to improve their English test scores, wait for exam results, or complete financial preparations.
A small number of vocational and pathway programs also offer a November/December start. This is not relevant for most Bachelor’s or Master’s applicants.
Recommended for most Nepali students: Semester 1 (February) for maximum program choice. Semester 2 (July) if you need more preparation time.
Canada — Intakes and Deadlines
Canada offers three intakes.
Fall (September start) is the primary intake and the most important one. The largest number of programs, scholarships, and seats are available here. Application deadlines typically fall between December and March of the prior academic year. This is the intake to target.
Winter (January start) is the second intake. Fewer programs are available. Major universities like University of Toronto and UBC have very limited Winter availability. Use this intake only if you missed the Fall deadline.
Summer (May start) is limited to specific programs at specific colleges. It is not relevant for most undergraduate or Master’s applicants.
Recommended for most Nepali students: Fall (September). Begin preparations at least 12 full months in advance.
United Kingdom — Intakes and Deadlines
The UK operates almost entirely on one intake.
September/October start is the primary intake for the overwhelming majority of UK universities and programs. A small number of universities offer a January start for select courses, but this is the exception.
For undergraduate applications: submit through UCAS by January 31 for most programs. The deadline is October 15 for Oxford, Cambridge, and most Medicine programs.
For postgraduate (Master’s) applications: apply directly to universities. Deadlines are more flexible, but most competitive programs fill up between February and April for the September start. Earlier is always better.
Recommended for most Nepali students: September. For postgraduate programs, apply by January or February at the latest. For undergraduate programs, follow the UCAS deadlines precisely.
United States — Intakes and Deadlines
The US operates on two main intakes.
Fall (August/September start) is the primary and most important intake. The vast majority of programs, scholarships, teaching assistantships (TAs), and research assistantships (RAs) are only available in Fall. Application deadlines vary significantly by university and program — some competitive programs close as early as December, others accept applications through March or April.
Spring (January start) is available at many universities but with significantly fewer options, less scholarship availability, and weaker cohort integration. Only consider Spring if your specific circumstances require it.
Recommended for most Nepali students: Fall. For competitive programs, start the entire process — including GRE/GMAT and TOEFL — 14 to 16 months before the intended intake.

Choosing the wrong intake does not just delay your education. It delays your income, your career, and in some cases pushes you out of the program you wanted because seats are gone. Do not leave this decision to the last month.
